about

The story within the song shows a character who dreams of going back to the days of slavery. His true self is not known until the final verse which holds the secret to his insane idea.

This song is classic dark humor. As described in wikipedia, "The term black humor (from the French humour noir) was coined by the surrealist theoretician André Breton in 1935,[7][8] to designate a sub-genre of comedy and satire[9][10] in which laughter arises from cynicism and skepticism,[7][11] often relying on topics such as death."

The Lonesome Death of the Derelict

F C
There's a morning mist settled over the hay field
F C
sunlight's got me rubbing sleepy eyes
F C Am
My make-shift bed suddenly crashes down to the ground
D G G7
and I can't help but laugh until I cry.

There's a hundred and fifty year old oak trees planted in rows

lining each side of the shaded alley way

and rising from the ground I assume a thorny frown

imagining myself the master in his day.

Chorus:

F G C Am
Cracking the whip on all them slaves in that cotton field
F G C Am
prestige fitting like a glove
F G C Am
At Sunday church, I'll be there with my wife and kids in tow
D G G7 (Tag end F C )
and each night, I'll have my wench to love.

Instrumental verse and chorus

It's been two years since they let me out of Pineville

I grew to be quite fond of nurse Robicheaux

My Government check comes in each month on the third

but I can't remember where my mail goes.
